FAQ pure salmon farms

Pure Salmon faces and solves several major challenges on its construction sites:

  • Employee safety: Maintaining the safety of our employees during the construction of RAS salmon farms is a top priority, which requires pro-active Health & Safety plans and policies, experienced and reputable contractors, and constant supervision and reviews of safety procedures and indicators by management team.
  • Environmental compliance: We are committed to strict country and site-specific environmental regulations and zero tolerance for complying with these regulations is the rule.
  • Logistics: Shipping equipment and supplies worldwide and ensuring they are on-site on time is challenging.
  • Quality control: We ensure that the construction of RAS salmon farms meets the highest quality standards in all stages of the salmon’s life. Salmon’s welfare is the common thread running through all construction project components.
  • Schedule: Adherence to the construction schedule is critical to RAS farms’ success, ensuring that all construction activities are completed on time.
  • Stakeholder engagement: The construction of RAS salmon farms impact local communities, and we are committed to engaging with stakeholders such as local residents and environmental groups sustainably and responsibly.

The steps in our construction projects are as follows:

  • Site selection and feasibility: We select a suitable site for the RAS salmon farm based on factors such as water quality, access to resources, proximity to markets, and local regulations. We need to validate the site with the authorities and the community beforehand.

  • Design and planning: Our engineers and architects are responsible for designing the RAS system, including tanks, water treatment systems, farming support systems and other components. During early design stage, the necessary environmental and building permits and approvals from local and national regulatory bodies are obtained.

  • Construction: We build the RAS system, including water piping networks, fish tanks, water treatment facilities, feed system, and all monitoring instrumentation. This involves earthworks and foundation, concrete, and steel structure installation, architectural and finishes works, mechanical and electrical works.

  • Commissioning: We test and commission the RAS system to ensure it meet design performances. This involves testing individually all components, then automated operation sequences , testing with water through the systems, and ensure all sensors and alarms are in place for monitoring water quality.

  • Stocking and grow-out: We introduce the salmon eggs into the RAS system and monitor their growth and health. This stage involves control of water parameters through the instrumentation system, feeding the fish, and monitoring health.

  • Harvesting: When the salmon have reached market size, we harvest them and prepare them for sale. This includes grading, sorting, packing, and shipping.

  • Operation and maintenance: We continuously monitor the RAS system to ensure that it works optimally for the salmon’s welfare, and we carry out scheduled maintenance and upgrades as necessary.

By following these steps, we can ensure the successful construction and operation of a RAS salmon farm that produces sustainable, high-quality salmon for our customers.

Before starting the construction of a Pure Salmon RAS farm, we work on several necessary preparations, including:

  • Site selection: Select a suitable location for the RAS farm, close to a reliable water source, with access to resources as electricity and oxygen, offtake of products.

  • Feasibility study: Conduct a feasibility study to assess the economic viability of the RAS farm, including factors such as capital and operating costs, market demand, and potential revenues.

  • Permits and regulations: Obtaining the necessary permits for the construction and operation of the RAS farm. This will typically include an Environmental impact assessment to evaluate the potential impact of the RAS salmon farm on the surrounding ecosystem and decide mitigation measures as required.

  • Design and engineering: Development of detailed design for the RAS salmon farm, coordinated between Pure Salmon generic design of the farm and local civil and building engineering, following local norms and standards.

  • Construction planning: Development of a construction plan and schedule, including procurement of materials and equipment and hiring contractors and staff.

  • Training and certification: Ensure that staff involved in the construction and operation of the RAS salmon farm are trained and certified in the relevant skills and knowledge.
The equipment needed to build a Pure Salmon RAS farm are:
  • Standard equipment such as tanks, filters, pumps, and sensors and control systems typical for any water treatment facilities.
  • Specific equipment related to fish farming and processing, such as feed system, oxygen diffusion systems, fish harvesting systems, developed specifically for aquaculture applications.
  • Reliability of the installation is key for fish welfare, and equipment are selected for their robustness and include redundancies to allow for preventive and corrective maintenance downtime.
Building a Pure Salmon RAS farm requires a multidisciplinary team with different profiles and areas of expertise. Here are some of our key profiles:
  • Aquaculture engineer: Responsible for designing the biological growth plan, ensuring primarily fish welfare and biosecurity in the configuration of successive systems from eggs hatchery to fully grown salmon. An aquaculture engineer has operation experience gained from direct experience on a fish farm and has knowledge of water quality, fish behaviour, nutrition, and health management.
  • Structural Engineer: Responsible for the design and construction of the physical structures, including foundation and building, water retaining structures. His or her remit includes structural calculations and knowledge of building materials and local standards.
  • Mechanical Engineer: Responsible for the design and installation of mechanical components, such as pumps, filters, and aeration systems, which are essential to the operation of the RAS system. Skills include knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and machine design.
  • Electrical Engineer: Responsible for designing and installing the electrical systems, including control systems, which are required to operate the RAS system. His highly qualified added value includes power distribution, control systems, and instrumentation expertise.
  • Environmental Specialist: Responsible for ensuring that the RAS system is designed and operated to minimize its impact on the environment and maximize the welfare of the salmon at every stage of its life. Their highly skilled added value includes knowledge of water quality, waste management, and environmental regulations.
  • 3D modeller: Design and assemble components of the farm, integrating and coordinating all disciplines in a optimal spatial arrangement to ensure operability and maintainability of the facility.
  • Project manager: This profile oversees the construction process and ensures the project is completed on time and on budget. His or her highly qualified added value includes project management, planning, and risk analysis expertise.

At Pure Salmon, we have several ways to ensure the sustainability of our salmon RAS (recirculating aquaculture system) farm construction site:

  • Conducting Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) to identify and mitigate potential environmental risks associated with the construction and operation of the farm.
  • Implementing effective waste management practices, maximizing re-using and recycling, minimizing waste discharge and preventing water pollution.
  • Using energy-efficient equipment and renewable energy sources, such as solar power, to reduce the operation’s carbon footprint.
  • Engaging with local communities and stakeholders to ensure that the farm is developed and operated socially and sustainably.
  • Implementing a responsible sourcing policy for feed and other inputs, including ensuring that feed ingredients are sourced from sustainable and traceable sources.
  • Adopting best practices for fish welfare, for example, by providing adequate space and minimizing stress.

By adopting these practices, we ensure that our RAS salmon farms contribute to the operation’s sustainability, minimize its impact on the environment, and benefit local communities.

The number of staff and workers on a construction farm will reach up to 300 to 400 persons. This number is dependent on the location and selected construction methods.

The total duration for the construction of a large scale fish farm, including downstream processing facility, is about 2 to 3 years. However, operation of the facility can start early during the second year. The remaining construction activities typically take place, providing safety measures are in place, while the first stages of farming are already in operation.
